CANTERBURY. The Evening Mall, August 21, has the following There is a marked improvement to record during the past week in the state of the grain and flour maket, business having been brisker, and the rates previously quoted linn. Oats have been dull, present prices not encouraging ship pers. Good seed oats are in demand. Hay has been in active demand. Prices unchanged. In timber, we have to report a ■considerable rise, the average for scantling and hoards being 20s against 17s last week. Orders to the amount of about 400,000 feet have been received by the Akaroa sawyers. The increased activity is to be traced to the improved state of the building trade, and to a further anticipated rise in the quotations.
