MR FITZGERALD JOINED THE MINISTRY
We understand that the hon. member for Ellesmere, Mr James Edward Fitzgerald had joined the Ministry, taking the place of Mr Mantel), who lately resigned. This appointment is an experiment, the result of which we will watch with some anxiety. No one can deny Mr Fitzgerald’s ability, and in that respect, he will be an acquisition. But his antecedents, as a politician have shown that he is crotehetly and impracticable, qualities which would be the worst possible in a Native Minister at the present crisis. Perhaps, when once in harness, he may work well, and should he do so, then . his accesion to olllce will be of real value to the colony. But we think i' the experiment on the part of the Ministry; is a very bold one under any • pendent, August 15.
