COMMERCIAL.
OTAGO. Driver, Maclean A Co.’s Monthly Live Stock, Station, and Wool Eepoet. Dunedin, 18th July 1865. The transactions of the past month show an evident improvement in the demand for stock, fat especially. In the early part of the month our market for fat cattle being very bare, prices went in favor of the seller to a rate much higher than anticipated; this caused buyers to rather eagerly proceed to secure the next few months’ supply, and although there is not an over-supply for the winter months, we do not Wok for extreme rates, yet we are certain of their remaining firm. Fat sheep have shared in the same advance, less from anticipated scarcity than from firmness of holders —firmness which we think will ha fully justified by the results. Store sheep are quickly getting cleared oif at advanced rates, and holders of store cattle have good reason to look forward to a fair market for a description of stock, for the past few months difficult to realise on. Fat CaTtle. —Since our last report we have sold 600 head, from the stations of Messrs 0. and E. Thomson, J. Treeweek, John Anderson, J. and TV. D. Murison, Campbell Eros., Lee and M’Clyment, Wentworth, W. H. Hams, Maitland and Trumhle Of these we yarded and sold 143 head, at pnees ranging from £s 10s. to £34125. 6d. for bullocks, and from £7 to 14 10s. for cows; the balance, 453 head, wo sold on the runs, at rates equal to 355. to 40s. per 100 lbs., delivery up to October. In the earlier part of the month the prices at the yards were equal to 55s per lOOlbs. Consequently a full market since has led to a decline, and prices now realised, may be quoted at 37s 6d to 40s. However, the temporary pressue being now almost gone, we look for firmer rates; especially as in prospect of the Hokitika road soon being opened, we can expect no further supplies from Canterbury. Fat Calves are very saleable, at from £3 10s to £4 15s. We have sold more for delivery than at our yards. Store Cattle. —Although there are now business-like enquiries, we have only cleared off 312 head, mixed and in low condition, at £5 5s per head. Fat Sheep. —During the mouth the market has been barely supplied. From the extensively low rates lately realised by our fluctuating markets, holders have had cause to be reluctantto come forward. Weyardedaudsoldsl3at 15s from Messrs Julius’s run. We have sold for delivery on runs, 3350, various lots, at from 3£d to 4d per lb, according to vicinity. First-class Mutton would now realise 4Jd.; ordinary. 3J to 4d per lb at the yards. Store Sheep. —Our market is now nearly hare of ewes and lambs. Wo have sold 1506 2-tooth, at 20s; and 3.000 2, 4,6, and 8-tooth, 20a- We have now demand for 3,4, and 6-tooth at 225. to 215., according to breed. We have sold 3100 mixed lambs at former rales, say 24s per pair. Store wedders are much enquired for: we have sold 6300, atfrom 12s to 12s 6d each. Station Properties. —We have sold the Goodwill of Mr Jfobie’s Eun, with 6,883 Sheep, and 1,400 Acres Freoehold, for £9.100; equal to each, to Messrs Webster and Aitken. Messrs Thomson’s Station on the Strath Taieri, comprising 35,000 Acres, with 12,000 Sheep, 90 Acres Freehold, and most complete improvements, we will offer for Sale hy Public Auction on the 20th inst. Wool.— The transactions for the season are now closed, and with the exception of a few odd lots, amounting to 30 Bales, forwarded for sale or shipment, we have little to report here. Our London Correspondent states; —“The general opinion that the termination of the war in America was not far off, and uncertainty as to what effect this might have, contribute to the quiscent state of the Market ; but more recent news of the surrender of General Leo and his army, giving hopes of a restoration of peace, has imparted a firmer tone to our Produce Markets generally —an improvement in which it is but reasonable to suppose that Wool will participate. Quantity to be offered at nert Sale, 130,009 Bales.”
