WELLINGTON.

We learn that Mr 0. S. Cai ter, member for Wairarapa in the General Assembly, bad resigned his seat. In reference to this, the Independent of the 6th says that “Mr H. Bunny and Mr Toomath are spoken of as intending candidates, the former having distinctly intimated such a purpose.” The same journal also says that “ Mr. Edward Pearce has received overtures from the electors, and wo believe only hesitates complying with their request till an influential meeting is got up in his favor That this will be done is probable enough, so that in a few days we may expect to have Mr Pearce and other candidates fairly in the field."

The Telegeaph Extension.—The p.s. Sandfly left yesterday morning on her trip in connection with the survey of the Strait preparatory to the laying down of the telegraph cable. It is expected she will return this evening.—Advertiser, July 4. New Zealand Debentuees.—We are given to understand, on the best authority, that a telegram has been received by the Government to the effect that a portion of the New Zealand eight per cent, debentures have been taken up in London at one per cent, premium.—Ibid.

Maoeies in the Legislative Council.—lt has been currently reported during the past week that the Government intended to appoint three native chiefs to be members of the Legislative Council. This, we have good reason to believe, is incorrect, We understand that the matter will be brought forward during the coming session, but, in tho meantime, no such appointments trill be made.—Advertiser, July 8. His Excellency the Gotebnoe.— We announced in our last issue that H.M.S.S. Eclipse, with His Excellency the Governor on board, had been compelled to return to Wellington in consequence of the boisterous state of the weather off Wanganui. Sir George Grey still remains at Government House, but we understand he will leave for Wanganui in the s.s. Wanganui on her next trip for the purpose of settling matters which require his presence.—lbid.
