LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Arrival of the Egmont. —By the s.s. Egmont, which came to anchor in the Bay at 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, we have our files of Southern papers. We notice that the sittings of the Supreme Court were being held at Wellington on the sth inst., having been adjourned from the advertised day (the Ist), in consequence of Mr Justice Johnston’s absence at Nelson. We notice that the following cases have been disposed of:— R. Darnell, Turakina, larceny, not guilty. J. MTntosh, stealing a eheque, not guilty. Two soldiers, M‘Dermot and G’Donoghue, Wanganui burglary—M‘Dermott not guilty, O’Donoghue guilty, sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labor. F, Warden, false pretences, not guilty. On the 6th: T. Graham, a man of color, stealing blankets, after a previous conviction was found guilty { and sentenced to 4 years’ imprisonment with hard labor, J. Smith, shooting with intent, not guilty. T. Poad, shooting with intent, -guilty, 6 mouths’ imprisonment with hard labor. F. Wishart, Wanganui, selling arms, guilty fined <£l and two days’ imprisonment. Proctor, stealing, guilty, 6 months’ imprisonment with hard laoor. This concluded the Assizes.
Moke Wrecks. —We are sorry to learn from the .Nelson Colonist of the wreck of the Grace Darling, on the rocks below the Arrow at the mouth of the Nelson harbor. The passengers had a narrow escape with their lives, but were landed in the pilot boat. The vessel was hopelessly damaged and uninsured.—The steamers Bruce and Wakool are both wrecked at Hokitika, although there is hope of getting the former off the spit, but the latter broke up directly she touched the spit, the passengers being landed with difficulty. The St. Hilda— The s.s. Hilda left Napier on Saturday, 3rd, at 5 p.m. and arrived at Poverty Bay at 8 next morning. Found the natives in a state of commotion, in consequence of the Queen’s flag being hoisted on the west bank of the river. Mr. M’Lean landed on Monday, and had an interview with them. About seventy signed the oath of allegiance. Left Poverty Bay for Waipu on Wednesday evening, and arrived there on Thursday. Mr. M’Lean landed and had a satisfactory interview with the natives. Left Waipu on Thursday evening, and entered at Tolago Bay at 2 a.m. ou Friday. Wind strong from S.S.E. Left Tolago Bay at 10 a.m. ou Saturday ; called at Poverty Bay; and arrived at Napier at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
