The Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, MONDAY, 12th JUNE, 1865.

The summary of the census furnished by the Eegistrar-General some time since, has demanded our attention ; but we have from the more immediate pressure of other matters, been compelled to defer its consideration until this present issue. A portion of Table No. 1 was given in our last, but as certain errors bad crept into it, we now re-putlish it in its entire form. The Registrar-General informs us that these tables are published in anticipation of the detailed returns, which may, when received, render certain corrections necessary, though not such as will affect any important question relating to the census.

Table 1, which we now publish, in addition to the civil population gives us the totals of the cultivation and crops, and the live stock in possession of the residents of each province, and is of very considerable interest and value. A striking fact is exhibited by this table, and that is the. great preponderance of males in the colony over females. Auckland shows a proportion of 5 males to

3 females; Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, and Otago, 2to 1; Wellington and Southland, 4 to 3 ; Canterbury, 18 to 18; Marlborough, the most disproportionate of all, Bto 3 ; and Nelson, the least, is 6 to 5. The total European population (non-military) about 8 to 5, In our nest we will endeavor to point out some of the most interesting facts shown by the other tables, in as readable a form as possible, for we must be allowed to aay that, however valuable they may be in a social and political point of view, and indeed interesting, to the lover of statistics, they are but dry to the gem rality of the public.
