The Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, MONDAY, Bth MAY, 1865.
By the arrival of the Prince Alfred on the sth from Auckland, and the Lady Bird o n the 6th from Wellington, we are placed in possession* of* ditr files of papers both from Auckland and the Southern Ports. We re* gret to say that the limited space at our disposal prevents our giving anything more than .an outline, of. the news to hand—not indeed that we have found, in any of 'the journals received, matter of more than ordinary interest.
The principal topic of the press from both i Northland South is the non-arrival of i the European mail at so unprecedentedly late a date, and this has at.length produced a feeling of alarm for its safety. From the seat of war (sic) on the West Coast the news is of the same character as usual—aggression the natives and submission on oiir part. The news consists of the shooting of. two soldiers (as, supposed), though'’ the body 'of one only has. as yet been found, at Stony Greek, Taranaki.. And the exceedingly narrow escape of three majors at Wanganui— Von Tempsky, Hookes, and Nixon—from an armed party.of Maoris, who fired shuts at them frt>m' exceedingly close quarters : and a very advantageous position, being on the heights above the majors, and af, from ■.’seventy to 100 yards distant, they being at the same timfe travelling along the beach, obstructed by boulders and the tide, which was in. The troops had ceased active operations. Genl. Cameron had left, and arrived in Auckland. The enemy had taken ! fresh and were strongly entrenching the Weraroa pa, that it has been expected would capitulate, and tha; Governor,' Seeing no ground to suppose that we should be able to conquer the rebels, Was (on- dit) .about, to issue a peace proclamation. ■ - • ; From 7 Wellington the principal news has relation-to the recent' provincial elections. For the city there were 12 con Jidates. Mr E. Pearce. Was .placed at the head of the pall, '451 -Wtes, being 1 an;independent ■ ♦lector, followed by ; Tumbali.Boriase, Rhodes l)i*hsfiel<i G; HuUter,. the first en-
tirely in the Government interest, stood tisth on the. list*,,, piling 333. Messrs Stokes. Allen, Mirtin,-and Standwell were at the foot of the |ist. polling but from 6S to 15 f, these four being all in the Government interest, and a very long way behiinl the lowest in the reform interest (Carpenter 213). The reform party consider the result as exceed, ingly -satisfactory. The- election for theHutt .took place on the; 23th ult., and resulted in the return of five gentlemen allpledged to .reform; and the placing of other five supporters of Featherston at the foot of the list. For the Wararapa-(west) three reform candidates have been .returned — Funny, Martin, and Welsh;- For Karori, thiouol) bad management on the part of the
radicals, the Government tins secured the return of two supporters —Johnston and Reading—and there are other elections yet to come off—For Porirua, Rangitikei. Wanganui, and .East Wararapa.
• FhjurJiad declined in. the Wellington.marl'et to £23, with a.confident anticipation of further reduction.
’ His Excellency had issued a proclamation condemning the P«i Marine fanatics, and calling on all good and loyal subjects to aid in the suppression of this superstition. We shall he able to give extracts from our files in our next issue, that are now un.avoidably held over for want of space. The Storm Bird had got off and arrived at Nelson.
