WELLINGTON.
(From the Advertiser ) , The Laboe Mabbet. —At present .there ig throughout the.-Province a great dearth -of labor, the consequence, no doubt, of many causes, the main one, probably, being’ tha discovery of goldfields so close at band as the Okitiki. Seamen too, are scarce, and almost all the vessels engaged ip the coasting trade are short-handed. The officers of the Marine Board have been busy in- their endeavors to. obtain about twenty men during the week, for the purpose of hauling the s.s. St. Kilda upon the slip.at Evans’ Bay, end have been unsuccessful, although a high rate of wages was offered, and it was only by the aid of some of the blue jackets belonging to Ii.M.S.S. Esk that the work was accomplished yesterday afternoon.
Robbery in an Hotel.—A robbery of a somewhat clever character was committed ou Wednesday evening in the “ Crown and Anchor” Tavern, Lambton Quay, when three watches (2 English lever and a gold watch) together with two chains, and a case of razors, were taken away from Mr. Merritt’s sleeping apartment. Another room, occupied by a young man named George Spicer, wag also entered, and a suit of clothes which were lying on tlie bed were placed in a trunk, and the trunk was removed out into the landing, the evident intention being to remove it when opportunity offered. The robbery took piace about the time the, lodgers were at tea, and it certainly must have been cautiously done, considering that it was broad daylight at the lime, and persons were moving about the house. We understand the police have obtained traces of the perpetrators of the robbery.
