Vessels in Poet. —Our harbor present? an unusually lively appearance, there being no less than twelve vessels in port. From a short distance these present the appearance of a forest of masts. The various cargoes they bring, the fresh arrivals of wool from the, country, and the receipt of mails from North and South, has made the Spit full of business for the last few days.
Removal of the Objectionable Tax on Newspapers. —We have already stated that we felt convinced that the imposition of the tax would be but for a limited period. We find that the Lyttelton Times is of the same opinion. It tells us—“lt trusts and has reason to hope that the Government will reconsider their determination and withdraw a tax which will be alike profitless and hurtful to the community.” The New Zealand Advertiser also says, in connection with this subject—-“ We believe we are correct in stating that in consequence of representations made to the Ministry by persons of influence in different Provinces, t. e tax of one penny imposed upon all newspapers passing through the Post Office will only be of temporary duration, and the proclamation will he rescinded as soon as an Excutive Council can be held. We need hardly say that we agree with the general public in expressing our opinion that the Government have exercised a wise discretion in taking the step alluded to.
