The Sea Serpent, wind bound, sailed for Blackhead and East Coast, on the evening of the 27th inst.; and the Success, also wind bound, on the morning of the 2Slh. The Storm Bird left Wellington on Thursday 29th at 7 a,m. and arrived tutu at iuyso p.m.; experienced light northerly winds and fine weather thioughont. She passed the Sea Serpent at noon southward of Blackhead, and the success 10 miles further South both standing to southward. The s.s. Storm Bird made a most satisfactory trial trip on Saturday afternoon. Although her bottom is in a somewhat Tarty state, she averaged nearly nine knots A. Z. AdwrV.isr, Dee: 97. Raxoatiua.—The Rangatira, Capt Muudlo, left Auckland on the 23rd instant, at noonarrived at Xapier on the 25th, nt 2 p.m.; left Ma-icr on the 2eth, at 3 p.m.. and arrived at We.lingian on the 27th, at 2,-15 p.m. Experienced strong head winds, with a heavy Bead sea, on the voyage from Auckland to Xapier. Went into the Iron Pot to discharge cargo and horses. Prom Xapier to this port had fine weather, with light head winds.— Wellington- Independent, 2i)ih Dec. ■ The I’., X.Z., and A.U.M. Co.’s .-.s. Airedale.—The Airedale, Captain le.gusou, left the Bluff at 3.23 p.m. on the 22nd inst.; arrived at Port Chalmers at 1 a.m. on the 2ird left, again at 10 a.m. on the 35th, and arrived at Lyttelton at 11 a ii. on the 23th; left again at noon on the 27th, and arrived in this port on the 28th, at 8.30 a.m .—lbid.
The ■Wfci.i.jKOTos and Otaco. —Another exciting steam lact' between these magnificent steamers took place between this port and Lyttelton. They left the Queen's Wharr together on tile 2tftii, at 2.1 ‘ pm.; the Ot v „,;o arrived at Lyttelton at 7.27 next morning, followed by the Wellington at 7.30 a.m.; the Otago thus beating her opponent by three minutes. The passrge was accomplished by the Wellington in 174 hours, her speed averaging about loj miles an hour during ths passage. We understand the Wellington’s bottom is very foul, and that she will shortly he cleaned and painted, when no doubt her speed will be materially iucreaaed ,—Jbid.
