Some little time since we called attention to the fact of two members of the Town of Napier being engaged in Public Service. Mr. Smith’s little job is perhaps not worth mentioning, but Mr. Fitzgerald must bear in mind that whether the Superintendent likes it or no. his seat at this date is legally vacant, and that at next meeting of the Provincial Council, if he does not go out before, objection will be taken to his vote. When we consider the mean and dirty shifts and contrivances which the Provincial Government brought to bear upon the question ; of, the validity of Mr. Colenso’s seat—when we remember the abortive attempt made by Ormond and M’Lean to cast out the only member in that Council -who is worth his salt —it is not surprising that the same miserable double-dealing leads those gentlemen to shelter Mr. Fitzgerald, than whom probably in
that Council there is not a more self-inter-ested and worthless member.
