MARLBOROUGH.

We learn from the Marlborough Press, received yesterday, that the Superintendent of that Province has resigned his office, and that an intimation has been received by his honor from Auckland, that the Governor will accept his resignation at the end of the present month. The reason for this delay in accepting Mr. Carter’s resignation, was to enable that gentleman to complete some works which his Government' had in hand. Mr. A. Seymour, it is understood, will succeed Mr. Carter in office.

A branch of the Union Bank of Australia has been opened at Picton. The people of Picton are being greatly benefitted by the importation of carcase meat from Wanganui, which is sold at considerably less price than meat killed upon the spot. There have been some very good prospects of gold obtained in the Wairau valley, in the boundary gully between the runs of Capt. Baillie and Mr. Watts. Good samples of gold have also been obtained on the opposite side of the river, from Timm’s valley. It appears to be the opinion of several practical miners that, if a shaft was sunk in the Wairau valley, at the dip of some of the leading ranges, the ground would be found as rich in many of the Victorian diggings.

A man named Riley, confined in Picton Gaol, had made his escape under very remarkable circumstances. The man was disabled in“one arm, having dislocated his el-

bow, but, nevertheless, he contrived to scale the wall of the gaol yard, and got clear, but the manner in which he accomplished his task appears to be very mysterious. The Marlborough Press is, henceforth, to be a Picton journal only, and a new paper, the Blenheim Record, is to be published at the last-named town. The Marlborough Times also is about to be started at Picton, and this, with the Havelock Mail, -will give the Province four newspapers. A heavy flood was experienced in the Wairau river, about a fortnight ago. A great portion of water poured down the Opawa, and Blenheim road to the ferry was, for several hours, flooded. Tbs road sustained a good deal of damage. The Rev. T. D. Nicholson, formerly Presbyterian minister at Nelsm, died suddenly at Picton a few days ago.
