Mr. Colenso stated the other day, in his place in the Council, that either himself or the Government ought to resign. We think that either he, Mr. Colenso, or his colleagues of the Town ought to resign. One of two things must be right. If the towns people are satisfied with the doings of the members who side with the Government, or don’t side with anything or anybody, but simply “ vegetate,” then Mr. Colenso’s opposition is useless. We should be extremely sorry to see Mr. Colenso take this course, hut it appears to us under the existing circumstances that no other is open to him. To stand alone in that Council—to be bullied and insulted by every stuck-up Jack who happens to be in there —by every fellow who chooses to speak without thought, and act without judgment—is by no means an enviable situation. We, therefore, counsel Mr. Colenso to leave the unequal contest, unless his town colleagues give him better support. Let the Government have its fling. The day is not far distant when those who have the misfortune to be here will rue deeply the doings of the Provincial Council of this day.
