To the Editor of the Hawke’s Bay Times. Sir, — It appears to me that toTe one of the first class is a great thing in Napier, as they can do just as they please; to wit, for the ball given by some of that class this week, permission was given for the use of the Council Chamber, and*the persons preparing or decorating the room were in the Building till after twelve o’clock on Saturday night (with lights of course), thereby endangering not only the Building, but the property of those persons immediately opposite. If the Council Chamis let for a ball or other amusements the preparations ought to be done during daylight. ° As a member of the Athenaeum, I may mention that I was told on subscribing to it the Superintendent had promised not to allow the Conned Chamber to be used for amusements or entertainments, so that the committee might reckon on a revenue for the use of the Hall which they had leased. Now, since that time there has been very few chances for the Committee to let.the hall, as the Superintendent has not kept his word but has let the Council Chamber to nearly every one that has applied for it. I, for one should not object to the Council Chamber being let if on condition that the parties (who prefer it to the Mason’s Hall) were called upon to give to the fund of the Athenasum an amount equal to that charged by the Committee for the use of their hall.
