By the papers received per steamer Queen, which arrived here from Wellington on Saturday morning last, we have the following intelligence. The Independent, in an extra of the 14th, has the following,— We learn by a private letter from the Front, dated the 6th inst., that Rewi, the great Waikato fighting chief, has been taken prisoner. He was severely wounded in three places. Two men of the 40th Regt. found him lying in a swamp, and when they brought him in, they received TlO each for taking him prisoner. It was reported at the Front that the Maoris are keeping Thompson a prisoner amongst themselves, and have 100 men on guard over him every day/ because he insists upon making peace ; and they wont acree to it, but are determined to fight it out. We liave teen informed by a passenger per Airedale, that previous to leaving Nelson, the cook of the s.s. Auckland had murdered a fireman belonging to the same vessel. They had had a quarrel, and the cook followed the fireman up the wharf, and plunged a knife into him, and the latter died almost immediately from the effects of the injuries received.
