To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times.

Sir, —If you can possibly spare the space, I should be very glad if you would republish in your columns an article which appeared in the March number of the Southern Monthly Magazine, headed “ German Immigration to the Waikato.” The writer, who has spent a considerable part of his existence in Germany, seems to have a very good idea of the subject on which he treats, and deals -with it in a very fair and liberal spirit. After a careful perusal of the article in question, I have come to the conclusion, although believing (as who does not ?) that English immigrants of the proper sort would be preferable to German ones, that the writer’s views are quite correct, and we should not despise the chance we now have of introducing into the colony a number of Germans, who, says the writer in the S.M.M., “ are poor ; but what they lack in wealth they make up in frugality, economy, and industry Altogether, the article is, I believe, a very useful production (if the suggestions of the writer be acted upon), and is well worth a careful perusal. I trust you will find room for it in your paper. I am, &c, A Settler. Napier, March 14, 1864. [Our correspondent will see we have copied the article referred to by him. We, however, are of opinion that, with the inducements proposed by the writer of the article in question, under good management, immigrants of the “ right sort” can be found in Great Britain, without having recourse to foreign aid to fight our battles.
