LONDON.
3rd December. Sir J. Lawrence bad been appointed Go-vernor-General of India. A committee has been appointed, under the presidency of the Duke of Cambridge, to raise subscriptons for a memorial to the late Lord Clyde, Obituary. —Mr. Cubitt; Mr. Banning; City Architect; Dr. M’Caul. Hebrew Professor, King’s College; Mr. Duncan, Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Mr. Bomaury, Dabrcc ; and Halos, the Norfolk giant. [From the Times, Deo. 2], New York, Nov. 20. The long-threatened attack on General Burnside’s isolated position has at last been made. General Longstreet advanced across the Tennessee, at London, on Saturday last, and moved towards Lender, but was driven back to within one mile of the river. During the night General Longstreet crossed the remainder of the troops, and on Sunday advanced in force upon the Federate, who fell back, skirmishing, to Lender. Several un-
successful attacks upon the Federals were made on Sunday night. On Monday morning the Federals, finding it impossible to hold their position, retreated to Campbell’s Station, or Concord, the Confederates closely pursuing them. Desperate fighting ensured, lasting throughout the day the Federals being driven from point to point. Under cover of the night the Federals continued their retreat, and on Tuesday reached their inner line of defences at Knoxville.
General Shackleford had a sharp encounter with the Confederates on the east side of the Holstein river, three miles from Knoxville, on Sunday, and succeded in checking their advances from that direction.
Washington despatches of to-day state that advices from General Burnside were received by the War Department this morning, to the effect that his position was impregnable.
It is believed that a great battle is being fought to-day.
