LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

The Provincial Council will meet this day at 3 o'clock p.m. Arrival of the “Eangatira.”—This vessel was at her anchorage early this morning, having left Wellington on Saturday, calling at Castle Point on her way up. She brings the following passengers for Napier,— Miss A. M’Coy, Miss M. M’Coy, Miss Margaret M’Coy, Miss Annie M’Coy, Messrs. Jones, J. Wilkinson, B. H. Jones, Tollemache, W. Lyon, M’Cowan and Collins, She also brings papers to the 16th inst.,, but they contain no news of importance. The Rangatira leaves again this day at 1 p.ra. for Auckland. The cause of her detention is as follows ; The Ran&atiea.—This vessel started for Kapler and Auckland on Thursday afternoon last. When opposite Evans’ Bay, a slight accident occurred to her machinery, which necessitated her bringing up, and she now lies at anchor at Port Jerningham. The necessary repairs having been effected, she will proceed on her voyage this afternoon at 3 o’clock.— lndependent, Jan. 16. A Provincial Government Gazette, was issued on Saturday last, containing (1) extracts from the “ Marine Boards Act(2) an Act passed in the late session of the Assembly, entitled “An Act to extend and make compulsory the practice of vaccination (3) a Proclamation reserving certain land from public Sale for the purpose of Military Settlements, in the Ahuriri block ; (4) a notification of the return of Thos. Edwards, Esq., as member of the Provincial. Council Council for the Town of Napier : (5) three notices by the Deputy-Registrar, touching the next sittings of the Supreme Court in this district; and (6) a return of cattle slaughtered iu the Napier district in the month of December, 1863, the totals of which were, viz., great cattle, 42 ; sheep, 206 ; pigs, 13; calves, 6; lambs, 8 ; total, 275. Competition versus Monopoly.—A Provincial Gazette of six pages was published on Saturday, primed by “ James Wood, at the Herald office,” at a cost to the Government of thirty shillings I Some two years and a half ago, prior to the opening of the Times printing office, a Gazette, by the same printer containing the same number of pages, cost four pounds, ten shillings! The Government will in all probability soon have to acknowledge the receipt of conscience money from some quarter.
