LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Rifle Shooting. —On Friday last, NewYear’s Day, six prizes were competed for by members of the town companies of Militia and Volunteers. The first was at 400 yards range, and resulted in a tie between Messrs. Renauf and Radley, both scoring 5 out five shots each. In shooting off, Renauf proved the winner. The next was at 300 yards, five shots each, and was won by Mr. Lament with 12 points. The next four prizes were at 200 yards, five shots each; the first being won by Mr. Radley, with 16 points; the second by Mr. J. Taylor, 13 points; the third by Mr. Foan, 14 points ; and the fourth by Mr. A. Rlake, 14 points. The hits were scored one, on the home principle. On TnuiiSDAY, 24th inst., a portion of No. 5 Company, of N.R.M., mustered near Patangata for drill and ball practice, under charge of Captain Herrick, when each man fired 12 rounds. Six at 200 yards and six at 300 yards distance, the shooting was very good for men who had had no practice with the Enfield. The average scored was ten points, Mr. Weston of Elthorpe, made the highest score, having four consecutive centres at 300 yards.
