TARANA K I.
Native. —Two of the enemy, weary of fighting at Auckland, have returned to (heir homes to recruit—one, Taniora, to Minn, the other, Akanui to Mataitawa. We have received through the Waitara natives Taniora’s account of a fight with the pakeiia, in which 6 inaories were killed, and, as he alleges, 15 whites, whose, bodies they counted ; but t lie latter exaggeration makes it difficult to identify the particular engagement—the death of Teira (Tikaokao’s nephew) in it, however, seems to point to that at Mauku. The Maoris, who Taniora says were 100 in number were a kohinga tangata —a collection from different tribes—Ngatimaniapoto o Mokau. Te Uriwera, Whakatohia and Ngaiporou of East Cape—the pakehas were 30 or 40. He speaks also of the death of a pakcha woman (poor Mrs. Fahey no doubt). He says the Maoris did not mean to kill but to take her prisoner, but she broke away several times, and the fourth time some cowardly wretch shot her. He says also, what for the sake of the natives themselves we hope may be true, that the ‘King’ disapproves of this most cowardly murder, and has ordered an inquiry for the perpetrator, who, when caught, is to be hanged. If there is any such disposition among the better natives we trust ttie Government will encourage it.
