THE ANNIVERSARY HOLIDAYS.
Monday and Tuesday last were kept as holidays in commemoration of the separation of this Province from that of Wellington. Roth days were bright and sunny, and the people all turned out in holiday costume for enjoyment. On the first day, rifle matches were the great feature, and as the hour of ten daew near, the time when the first match was fixed to commence, the “.crack” shots of several companies collected on the shooting ground, to contest for the match advertized. There were three prizes for competition ; first, All 155., second, A 7 16s. Bd., and third, A 3 18s. 4d. The firing was under the direction of Capt. Withers. Each man was to fire six rounds at 200 yards, and the hits were scored as follows, outer, 1, centre, 2, bull’s eye, 3. The following competitors having paid an entrance fee of 10s., the shooting was proceeded with, and resulted as follows ;
—From the above it will he seen that Blake won the first prize, ami Williams the second. Badley and Chapman, having scored alike, fired three more rounds for the third prize, which was won by Badley. They scored as follows: P. Badley 221 5 F. M. Chapman 002 2 A sweepstakes of five shillings each was then contended for by nearly twenty competitorSj, which was won by Mr. Lament. In the afternoon, two other matches were shot off, under the supervision of Captain Buchanan, which were cheifly contested by volunteers. The first match was at 250 yards range, 5 shots, with an entrance fee of half-a-crown,the winner to receive onehalf the amount subscribed and the entrance money. The winners of the three prizes in the morning were excluded, and the scoring was on a different footing, an outer counting 2, a centre, 3, and a bull's eye, 4, From the following score it will be seen that Messrs. Garry and Jeffares scored the same number of points, and three more rounds were fired, which resulted favorably to Mr, Jeffares.
103 The next event was at 200 yards range, four shots, scoring same as previous match, for one-third of the money subscribed and the entrance money, the winner of the last match to be excluded. It resulted as follows:
was held in the evening at the Council Chamber, which was well attended, and passed off, we understand, better than any of its annual predecessors, with the exception of the first, perhaps. Dancing was kept up with spirit until daylight, when the weary dancers betook themselves to their homes. The arrangements were superintended by Mr. Johnson, and gave great satisfaction. TUESDAY. Another Eifle Match at 150 yards opened the day’s proceedings, and resulted as follows:
The afternoon was taken up by Rural Sports, in which the “ red coats” of the 14th came out strong. The first was a foot race of 100 yards, which was won by Glynn, of the 14th, Daly being a capital second. Then followed another race at 400 yards, Daly being the winner in 58 seconds, with Glynn alongside of him. Merry (14th) won the hop, step, and jump (27 feet), and also the running long jump, and the high jump. The sack race was taken by Glynn amidst great laughter. Mr. John Baty was the victor in the wrestling match ; and Cluny, of the 14th, •proved himself the best man at putting the stone. The heel and toe walking match was awarded to Glynn. Harvey won the standing jump, and the three jumps. 1 he afternooirs sport was wound up with a horse race on the beach, one mile, for which four horses started. Mr. Parker’s two-year-old colt Rataplan was the winner, with Captain Hunters Strike-a-Lsght a good second.
