LATEST FROM THE SOUTH.

The s.B. Rangatira, Capt. Matheson, arrived in port yesterday at 4 p.m. She was bought in Wellington bv the N.Z. Steam Navigation Company for £II,OOO. On her downward trip to Otago she lost 3 head of cattle and 20 sheep, having bad ■weather off Banks Peninsula. She made the run up from Wellington in 24 hours against a head wind. She sails again for Auckland to-morrow freighted with sheep. The Lady Bird was to leave Wellington on Wednesday at 6 p m., ami will, in all propability, be at her anchorage here this morning. She will take cattle and sheep to Auckland. By her we have Wellington papers to the 13th inst., from which we cull the following items:— The Otago correspondent of the Lyttelton Times writes on the sth inst.: —

“ It has been so arranged that tho All England Eleven are to come to Dunedin. Mr. Jones of the Provincial Hotel, takes the responsibility of the whole affair into his hands, and the public have promised to support him most liberally with their subscriptions. Over seven hundred pounds have already been subscribed, and before this week passes away the amount on the subscription lists will, it is thought, exceed a thousand. Mr. Jones took his departure by tho last Melbourne steamer, to enter into negotiations with Mr. Marshall, to whom tho All England team is to bo consigned. I am told you boast of some good cricketers, if so, their presence will be required hero very soon for practice.” Wakoasui. —It is reported, on good authority, that instructions have been given to the recruiting agents in Australia to engage a thousand men for settlement in this province, and that they will begin to arrive so soon as the Auckland contingent (2,000) has been raised. We believe this welcome piece of information may bereliedupon. —Chronicle October 10.
