WELLINGTON.

The Supreme Court. —The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court commenced on the Ist inst., and were of unusual length. The military rioters were found guilty and sentenced to terms of imprisonment varying from two to nine mouths. There were two charges against an old settler of tire name of waters, for selling gunpowder to certain natives, on one of which he was acquitted, and on the other found guilty, and was sentenced to three years penal servitude. There was some hesitation on the part of the jury to bring in a verdict on the evidence of natives who had purchased the powder for the purpose of laying the information, and knowing, as the public did, that powder had been sold wholesale to the Maories, they were reminded of the truth of the old adage, “ that one man may steal a horse, while another is hanged for looking over the hedge.”— Advertiser, Sept. 12.
