His Lordship the Bishop of New Zealand at the opening of the Diocesan Synod held at Auckland on the 30th nit., in speaking of the outlying district of Taranaki, says ;

“ I pass by Aotea and Kawhia, as the church can only claim one or two scattered settlers on the line of coast from Raglan to Taranaki. In the town of New Plymouth, it is encouraging to find that the troubles of the settlement have not prevented the enlargement of the church of St. Mary, which has been carried out at a very considerable cost by the liberal contributions of the congregation. In the country districts thoindustryofthc set tlers, and consequently the work of the church, has been suspended by the war. But we may now entertain the hope that peace and order will be re-estab-lished ; that the chapels at the Bell Block, Henui, and Omata will again be brought into use ; and that a chapel will be built, as long ago proposed at Tataraimaka. At all events, in whatever manner it may please God to direct the issue of affairs there is at least this comfort —that there is no longer any difference of opinion. All aro now agreed that the right is on our side ; and there can be no doubt that the right will ultimately prevail. Our brethren in that distant part of the diocese may be assured that we sympathise with them in their troubles, and earnestly desire that they may return to their deserted farms, build up their ruined homesteads, and hallow again their desecrated chapels; and may the blessing of the God of peace be upon them.”
