TOWN ELECTION.

NOMINATION. Tuesday last, February 24, was the dayfixed for the nomination of one member to serve the town in the Provincial Council, in room of W. Colenso, Esq., resigned. At the usual hour (noon,) the Returning Officer read the Superintendent’s writ, and also a letter from Mr. Colenso, intimating that he (Mr. Colenso) wished his name to be withdrawn from the list of candidates. The fob. lowing gentlemen were then brought forward: Mr. Michael Fitzgerald was proposed by Mr. M'Nalty, and seconded by Mr. Miller. Mr. Thomas Edwards was proposed by Mr. Oxeubridge, and seconded by Mr. John Wood. Mr. Frederick Sutton was 'proposed byMr. John Johnson, and seconded by Mr. R. Wiggins. Mr. Colenso was also nominated, although he had declined to come forward, —being proposed by Mr. Munn, and seconded bv Mr. Sebley. Mr. Edwards said they were well aware of his sentiments, as he had but recently been before them. He would not support the town against the country interest, but would do his best for both. He would support the improvement of the harbor, and thought if they returned him that he should be aide to do them some service. Mr. Fitzgerald said he had come forward at the solicitation of several friends, and would serve them the to best of his ability if elected. He had no interest in the country, and although he had been returned for the country, he would ask if he was an honest man if he did not do his duty for the district that had returned him. The Returning Officer then took a show of hands, and declared it to be in favor of Mr. Fitzgerald, when a poll was demanded by Mr. Edwards, which took place on the

following day, the result of which was as under .* — 'sf POLLING. Fitzgerald 38 Edwards 30 Sutton 1 Mr. Fitzgerald was then declared duly elected. Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Edwards both returned thanks to the electors for the support each had received, and the proceedings terminated.
