LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Disgraceful rescue of a Maori from Custody in Napier. —On Tuesday last, a native named Paora Rcrcpu was taken in charge by two policemen for being drunk and disorderly. Whilst conveying him to the lockup, they were obstructed by another native, opposite to Messrs. Rich & Parker’s, in Carlylc-street. Several natives now came up, and showed resistance, one of them, Paul, flourishing a tomahawk at one of the policemen, when Mr. 11. Parker courageously rushed in, threw him down, wrenched the weapon from his grasp, and threw it away. The native was now rescued from the hands of the police, who were about to retake him, when Mr. M’Tean ordered them to desist, and let the Native go. The New Ferry Punt for the crossing of the Ngaruroro, was launched on Wednesday morning last, and fixed in its place for traffic the same day.
