The Daily Times of 31st current, thus speculates on the chance of the various horses— As the Champion race draws nigh more interest is evinced in it. Mormon having arrived in such good condition, is naturally the favorite from his past performances. Still the race is by no means considered a gift to him ; other animals have their admirers, and are likely to bo backed at short prices before the event. Shillelagh, the Tasmanian horse, is said to be in excellent condition, and bis admirers confidently rely on bis being “ there or thereabouts.” Antonelli has a great many triends. He has been in training near, or on the course for some time, and is meant to win if lie can. Revoke, the Canterbury mare, from her late performances must be considered dangerous. In two races she beat Ultima, one of the Nelson representatives in the Champion. Waimea is, however, likely to bo the best Nelson horse, and there arc not wanting those who think her good enough to win. Nelson horses arc generally fortunate, and the Nelsonians are apt to say that if they have not the best gold fields, they have the best nags in New Zealand. The two three-year-olds from Auckland are maidens, but they come of the best blood in the Colony. They run on (he most favorable terms—the spring instead of the autumn weights for ago having been adopted. Consequently, although they are not far off from four years they receive 2111 is. from animals of that age, 3811 is. from five-year-old horses, and from six-year or aged, 421bs. Besides this they have their allowance of 21bs. as maidens. More unlikely things have happened than the race falling to the shai’o of one of these animals; at any rate Mormon, with all his prowess, will find he has his work to do.
