To the Editor of the Hawke's Bag Times

Sir, —-Would you oblige me by giving the following letter a place in your next issue, as the editor of the Herald refuses to , give it publicity on the excuse that our superintendent has had enough said and written about him of late, and that I had better make application to you for its insertion in the Times. Yours, &c., R. Hollis. To the Editor of the Hawke's Bag Herald. Sir, —Accidentally reading the Hawke's Bag Times this morning, I read that certain clauses are to be submitted to the Provincial Council of Canterbury to fine or iullict punishment on all licensed victuallers who serve liquor to habitual drunkards. Now, if this subject be brought before our Council of Napier it will do good, only that wc will add a proviso that no superintendent, or any other government official, J.P., Ac., be allowed to board and lodge at public houses, drinking' and creating more noise than the working class, and having the advantage of being put to bed by the landlords when drunk whilst the working men are kicked out of doors into the hands of the police, who are by no means immaculate. Now, to improve on the Canterbury plan, I mote that all government officials and leading men of this Province who are found intoxicated bo fined double the amount of the working man, for the old proverb is—“ Where much is given much is expected.” Rorert Hollis, P.J. Government Building, alias Immigration Barracks, only there are no immigrants. Napier, Dec. 11th, 1802. P.B.—And as I understand that gambling is carried on in a certain house very extensively, I mote that it should be prohibited. R. 11.
