Government Papers. —By the courtesy of the Colonial Secretary we are in receipt of a large number of papers relating to the government of the Colony, extracts from which will be found elsewhere in our columns. “Chapman’s New Zealand Monthly Magazine.” —The first number of this periodical is before us, and, as far as typography, and general “get up” goes, we think it would bear comparison with many of its older and stronger Antipodean contempories; andcertaiuly reflects credit on the office at which it was printed. We cannot, however, say as much for the readable matter, and more especially the poetry. We believe, however, that this the first number, is no criterion of of what the magazine will be ultimately. Considering the talent and population of the Colony, we have some faith that this effort will not be allowed to fail either from want of contributions or subscriptions, and we trust the publisher will reap the reward due to him in his endeavours to introduce such a class of literature amongst us.
