AUCKLAND.
Business seems to be stirring in’ consequence of the opening of Coromandel. Yesterday was the busiest day we have yet seen on the Queenstreet wharf, and everywhere in the business thoroughfares there was increased activity. The working men asked 10s. to 12s. per day, to begin at 9 a.m. This is the immediate effect of the diggings. What the result would be it would be idle to speculate, but of one fact there can be no doubt, it will have the effect of introducing a large labor power in the province to aid in its material development.—Daily Southern Cross, July 3. Couets Maetiae.—There have been several courts martial held of late, but owing to the fact that reporters are not admitted to those tribunals we cannot supply our readers with the particulars. The more important cases were the following:— Michael Madigan, 57th regiment, was tried 3 for striking a sergeant of the same corps at Wanganui, where he was statiorted, together with repeated charges for outrageous conduct, about the same date. He was found guilty, and sentenced to be shot. This sentence has since been commuted to penal servitude for four years. Private Mark Clanfield, 70th regiment, was tried and convicted for striking an officer at Otahuhu. Sentenced to be shot: since commuted to 11 years’ penal servitude.—Dally Southern Cross, July 8.
