TARANAKI.
The following is the memorial proposed to be addressed bj the settlors of Taranaki to Governor Browne, at Hobart Town : To His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, K.C.8., Governor of Tasmania, &c., &c., &c., We, the undersigned, settlers of Taranaki, New Zealand, having full confidence in the policy adopted by your Excellency while Governor of this Colony, and believing that we have the sym-
pathy of your Excellency in our present unfortunate position, and believing also that no fpermanent or lasting peace is likely to be obtained for Taranaki in which full and ample security for life and property are guaranteed, wo humbly beg your Excellency to take our case into your consideration, and advise ua whether a home such as would suit our immediate wants may not be found in Tasmania, and, if so, on what conditions. We would also beg to express our belief that any peace, however desirable, by which the natives are not taught to respect British supremacy is not likely to be either durable or lasting. ’ With the greatest respect, we beg to subscribe ourselves your Excellency’s most humble and obedient servants. This Memorial will lie at the house of Mr. Wm. Black for signature, and it is earnestly requested by the committee that no person will sign this document except bona fide settlers. By order of the committee, March 16, 1862. James Hay, Chairman. We have great satisfaction in stating that there is a good prospect of the iron sand being taken in hand by a respectable and enterprising English firm. They appear to have purchased of the late company the plant which had been shipped, and have written for full information on a variety of matters, including all the points of local information which we alluded to a few weeks since, as necessary for the iuiormation of a correct opinion as to the profitable working of the undertaking.—Taranaki Herald.
