NELSON.
Joseph Ellis, charged with the wilful murder of Esau Russ, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to ten year’s penal servitude. Matilda Eliza Haslam, charged with the wilful murder of her female child, was, after a long consultation by the jury, found guilty and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment. Pepene, a Maori, charged with killing Pari his wife or concubine, was found guilty of murder with a recommendation to mercy ; he was sentenced to be hung.
