To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times. Sir, —I’ve just popped in to enquire if you can guess how it could have happened that when I directed the point of my umbrella to the Editor of the Herald, Mr. O.P.S. contrived to get hooked by the handle ? A certain sign that it is not the rotten thing he is pleased to call it, or it couldn’t have fished him out as it has done. Now, don’t you think, Mr. Editor, that the ass he speaks of is to be found in the Herald's harness, who first directed public attention to Mr. Bousfield’s private affairs—being at the same time most discreetly silent about others who deserved exposing ? For it seems that that gentleman was farming his own land while rumor avers that there are others nearer the “ top of the tree” than he who, in violation of law, are renting grass lands of native owners, inflicting wrong on the government and on the public for their own private gain. And, sir,

don’t you think that there are two of those asses ? and that O.P.S. is the other ? as he could not perceive that this was the aim of ray enquiry ? and also because he was so fast in fitting on a cap that was not made for him. So hoping I don’t intrude, I am, Mr. Editor, Your obedient servant, Paul Pry. Dec. 16, 1861.
