LOCAL INTELLIGENCE
A shock of an earthquake was very generally felt on Thursday last, at a few minutes before 12 a.in. It lasted some seconds, the beginning ami ending being the most distinct.
A A hale Ashore. —Numbers of our townspeople have lately gratified their curio ity by the inspection of a small whale, recently washed upon the shore near Marine Parade. It was about 12 feet long. Ike sale of Crown Lauds, pursuant to advertisement, took place on Saturday last. The result has been most satisfactory, and certainly indicates the greatest confidence as
to the prosperity of our Province. The lots realized the subjoined prices :
'No. of Lot. Acreage. Upset Price. Price Realized. s. d. £ s. d.
The sale realized £3771 IB?. 6d not including the deposit of 10 per cent., and the total number of acres sold was 8638. Legal. — Mc.Roberts and others v. Carter. In this case the Provincial Government have given notice of appeal;—first, on the ground that the clause relied on by the plaintiffs is not susceptible of the interpretation contended for ; second, that the receipts were taken in full; and third, that the damages were assessed on a wrong principle. Mr. Colenso has entered into a bond of <£l7o to defray the expenses of appeal. [As we were going to press, we were informed that the notice of appeal in the above case has been withdrawn, and the matter has been settled. —Ed.] The Waipukurau Election. —We hear that the seat for this district is likely to be contested, Captain Lambert, who is said to favor the policy of the late Superintendent, being opposed by Mr. Grant. The nomination takes place to-morrow. Sudden Death at Mohaka. —On Saturday last several men had been drinking at Mr. Sims’ house, Mohaka, among whom was a man named Higginbottom, who laid down to sleep in a state of intoxication. About halfpast 12, Frederick Wilson, employed on board the Gipsy, went into the room to wake him, but found him dead.—-An incpiest was held on the body as soon as possible afterwards, and we believe that a verdict of “Died by the visitation of God” was recorded, although we are not in possession of any of the depositions. The deceased was decently buried the next day (Sunday,) Mr. Iligby in the absence of any clergyman reading the burial service. °
