Dai xl tins 1 Otli dav of / October, 1 SGI." f The followmg Is the Polling P 1 ce for iho Electoral District of the Town of Napier :—The Resident Magi-i r.iie’s Court House, Napier. JOO \ T CI’.RUING, Returning Officer, Dined this inih day of October, 1861. To the Electors of the Town of Napier. GENTLEMEN, —Onr older and more influential Set 1 jers having bad precedence and opportunity for presenting themselves as Candidates lor the Representation of Napier, and others declining (o come for ward at the present lime, I do not bcsilale under these circumstances to solicit your voles and support for one of the Scats in onr Provincial Council, for the increased Representation of tlio Town of Napier. I have the less hesitation in n.-king for the support of (he Electors, inasmuch as besides having a direct and local interest in the advancement of the Town of iSi a pier, in which 1 have lived amongst you for upwards of four years, I have fully expressed my opinions on all political mailers which have hccu publicly discussed since wc attained Separation from Wellington, and from the fact of their being invariably and consistently opposed to the Squatting interest, it is not too much to say that they coincide with and are the views of the majority of the Electoi’s of Napier and of Freeholders generally throughout the Province. My opinions respecting local matters ; such as the improvement of onr Pori, the formation of Main Roads from it direct and uninterrupted, north ns well as south, beginning at the beginning, and gradually satislying the demands of the more remote Districts, have been in like manner known to most of you. Secondly, those on the matter of the Joint administration of the Survey and Clown Lands Oflice by an irresponsible Commissioner, were the means, I believe, of inducing the late Superintendent to offer me unsolicited the honor of a seat on the Laud Board lately set aside by the present Superintendent, and although the necessity for this Board docs, in my opinion, still exist as a preventive measure, yet I trust the occasional advent of a Judge of (he Supreme Court at Napier may be found an efficient corrective substitution. 1 have briefly alluded to this matter here, both to correct erroneous impressions anonymously circulated with respect to my connection with this Board, as also to give me the opportunity of slating that should I bo honored with your confidence ns one of your Representatives in Council I shall not ncceptof any Government appointment. Lastly, whatever shall tend to promote and increase our local, commercial, and agricultural prosperity in particular, shall have, as it has hitherto had, my most cordial support; nor should our Provincial Council neglect any means in its power of facilitating the introduction to the Napier Market of timber grown in (his Province, and thus avoid (he great annual loss incurred in importing it from Auckland and Wellington. Our direct communication with Sydney and Auckland by s!cam is a matter of too great and evident importance to need any comment from me. I trust 1 shall on a iulnro occasion be able to give yon verbally any further information yon may chmnnd of me, and meantime I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, T UOS. DAWSON TRTPHOOK. , Napier, Oct. 22, 1861.
