LOCAL INTELLIGENCE

Mr. James J. Elwin has, we hear, been appointed Master of the Clive School, vacant by the resignation of Mr. Bates.

Curious Circumstance. —A remarkable instance of the great length of time that a cat can live without nourishment lately occurred in Napier.—Oh Friday, the 80th ult., a one-pound salmon tin emptied of its contents, excepting the few scraps that usually remain in the crevices, was thrown out from the residence of Mr. Hohen. A cat (attracted no doubt, by the tempting morsels within,) pushed its head into the tin, and was seen to make off into the garden.—lt appears that, although puss succeeded easily in getting its head into the tin, it was quite a difficult matter to get it out, for on Mr. Hohen walking in the avenue, the next Saturday but one following, he saw the poor animal lying in the shade of the trees, with its head still encased with the salmon tin. Mr. Hohen at once relieved the cat from its undesirable head-dress, while pussy immediately made off, apparently little worse for its long abstinence from food or water, its head having been thus imprisoned for nearly nine days.
