SECOND KIWI CHICK IDENTICAL WITH FIRST: BOTH WELL
The second kiwi chick, which Weighs 10 ounces, was hatched at the Hawke's i Bay Aeclimatisation Society's game farm, Greenmeadows, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Identical in appearance with the first chick, which was born on September 19, the second chick is active and well and is approximately the same size as the first one when hatched. * The second egg was laid 25 days after the first and took 77 days to hatch. The female bird sat for three days only after laying the first egg, which took 80 days to hatch. The male bird took over and sat for the remaining 77 days, and he continued sitting until the second egg hatched yesterday, so has been sitting for close on 100 days. The female bird still stands somewhat aloof, but attacks viciously anyone who goes near the family. Upon the chicks being hatched the male bird devours the shells. The first chick left the nest when six days old, but when tired goes back to the nest with the male parent, which is caring for both chicks. Congratulations on the hatehing of the second chick have been received by the Hawke's Bay Aeclimatisation Society and the curator, Mr F. D. Robson, from the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, Mr Parry expressed appreciation of the interest and untiring efforts of the curator and the society.
