France Defeats Edwards
(By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tennis of a high standard was seen ih the Wellington lawn tennis championship tournament to-day, the star match being that in which' D. G. France beat N. Edwards. France beat Edwards because, with a greater variety of strokes he was also infinitely superior as a tactician. Had he not made so many errors in the net with a topped forehand drive off comparatively simple balls, he would have v;on in more decisive fashion. To France's greater versatility and tactical skill Edwards was able to present beautiful long raidng drives, generally directed to the eorners, and ability to move quickly about the court, a courage never to cease from trying, and excellent volleying and smashing on some few occasions.
Right from the start of his match with R. Ferkins, N. Bedford made no rnce of it. He played right at the top of his form with keenness and concentration. Following are the principal championship results: — Men's singles. — Third round: D. G. France beat N. Edwards, 6 — 4, 9 — 7; R. Howe beat K. Dyer, 4 — 6, 6 — 3, 6 — 1; N. Bedford beat R. Ferkins, 6—0, 6^-3; N. Sturt beat J. Hamilton, 6—1, 6—2. Men* doubles. — Second round: Bedford and Edwards beat Nevitt and Nevitt, 6 — 2, C — 3. Mixed doubles. — Second .round: D. G. France and Mrs France beat Dyer and Miss J. Burns, 6—4, 3—6, 6—1; R. Ferkins and Mrs N. Dickson beat A. D. Latham and Mrs Latham, 5—7, 6—4, 6 — 3-
