HASTINGS WATER-SUPPLY

Restriction of Use in Gardens "We are very near the critical stage' and must restrict the consumption somewhat," commented an official of the Hastings Borough Council this morning when announcing that it had been decided to impose the customary restrictions on the use of water for extraordinary purposes, such as water the garden. The continued spell of exceptionally dry weather influences the consumption of water in the borough to a marked extent, and, though there is an ample supply "of water, the problem presented the water department is keeping the supply ' up to the demand, especially with a view to ensuring an adequate supply of water in the event of an outbreak of fire in the town. "The pumps are going a full pressure all the time these days," mentioned the official. "Over 2,000,000 gallons was consumed yesterday, and it is imperative that something should be done to keep the consumption within reason." As from to-morrow, the beginning of the New Year, the hosing of gardens and the use generally of the borough water-supply for other than household needs, will be restricted. Appreciation of the fact that householders are desirous of keeping their gardens in good appearance and with a reasonable amount of moisture is shown by the decision to allow the use of hoses on the gardens between the hourse of five o'clock and seven q'clock each evening. "It must be borne in mind, however, that the hoses should be held in the hand and not be allowed to spray unattended," said the official.
