AMATEUR ATHLETICS
Sharpley's Fast Hurdles at Napier McLEAN PARK MEETING F. Sharpley, Hastings star hurdler, m'ade an attempt on the New Zealand record for the 120 yards hurdles at the Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's meeting on McLean Park last evening, and succeeded in equalling the record time of 15 l-5secs., at present officially held by H. E. Wilson, of Wellington. The record is of long standing, and, although there have been times when Sharpley has beaten it, none of his attempts have yet been officially recognised. In Dunedin he covered the distance in 15 seconds, but the track was ruled to be downhill. Twice at Rotorua recently Sharpley turned in better time than Wilson, and it is possible that one of these times will be recognised. Other special items at last evening's meeting, which drew the best crowd this season, were a pole vault exhibition by R. Johnson, Hawke's BayPoverty Bay champion, and a walking exhibition by Morton Alexander, of Christchurch, a young pupil of Ian Driscoll, the" New Zealand champion.
