Proportion Increasing

WELLINGTON, This Day. There were more single men ancl women in 1936 than in 1926, according to census returns issued by the Government' Statistician. It is sbown that of those 21 years of age and over, 30.23 per cent. of males had never married up to the time of taking the census in 1926, but last year the percentage was 30.36. The proportion of adult females who had never married also rose from 23.48 per cent. to 24.28 per cent. The official comment up'on the position is that in view of the Dominion', 3 population, the proportion of persons never married merits further examination. It is stated that the majority of persons married between the ages oi 20 and 30 years. A comparison with the results of the preceding census shows that between those ages there were definitely higher proportions and higher number s unmarried in 1936 than 10 years earlier. * Last year there were 47,451 unmarried males between the ages of 21 and 24, while those between 25 and 29 numbered 35,531. The total of 16,791 was shown for those between 30 and 34. Unmarried females between lho ages of 21 and 24 last year totalleii 35,939. From 25 to 29 years of age the figure had dropped to 23,197, and aga*'n to 12,126 for tbose between 30 and 34. In both the 1926 and th® 1936 census totals the males predominated.
