Armed Men Guard Markets (Received 30, 10.30 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 29. The' striKe in the French public services, which began to-day, affects approximately 140,000 Municipal employees, who were allowed oiily 7/8 a week to meet the increased cost of living, ocmpared with 13/4 paid to State officials. The underground railways, bua services, eleetric and water undertakings, but not the hospital servicps, are involved. Armed and steel-helmeted men are guardipg the markets in order to prevent tlie strikers interfering with army vans conveying food. By 433 votes to 95, the Chamber of Deputies increased their own salaries by 7200 francs a year and passed a Bill granting 600 francs a month to each Deputy's secretary.
