WAIPUKURAU THEATRE
DICK POWELL IN "THE SINGING MARINE," FRIDAY. A couple of years ago Dick Powell was a West Point military cadet in "Flirtation Walk." After that he was midshipman in "Shipmates Forever," At the Waipukurau Theatre on Friday and Saturday we will have his flrst local showing as a "seagoing soldier," in "The Singing Marine," a delightful musical comedy. In the judgment of a reviewer, "The Singing Marine" is the best of the Dick Powell pictures to date. The yarn runs like this: Dick is a bashful private in the Sau Diego barracks, in love with a waitress (Doris Weston, a newcomer to films) : but afraid to tell her of his affection. There are six grand songs in the production, five of them by the famed team of Harry Warren and A1 Dubin. Powell and Miss Weston are supported by a splendid cast which includes Hugh Herbert, Allen Jenkins, Lee Dixon, the eccentric dancer, Jane Darwell and Larry Adler. "The Singing Marine" has plenty oi comedy, a lot of big spectacles, and can be thoroughly recommended to thu whole family. MONDAY NEXT: "GIRL IN A MILLION." Sonja Henie, in the very popular picture "Girl in a Million" will be shown on Monday and Tuesday next.
