CRUSHED BY FERRY
Auckland Boy's Death While Fishing •Crushed between the vehicular ferry boat Sparrowhawk and the Northcote passenger wharf on Sunday afternoon, Leslie Simpson McGifford, aged 11. son of Mr. C. C. McGifford, of Fairfax Avenue, Northcote, suffered chest injuries from which he died a few minutes later. The boy was fishing from a stringer below the wharf, when Mr. A. Copping. of Queen street, Northcote, who was on the wharf, called to him that the ferry boat was approaching. The boat brusbed against the fender pile, as u'sual, to work its way into the vehicular berth, then glaneed off, crushing the boy against a stringer. Mr. Copping reached down and grasped the boy's hand. to prevent him falling into the water, and Mr. A. J. Hurley, of Northcote, who was in a motor-car on the ferry boat, went to his assistance. Mr. Hurley put the boy in his car and dro.ve to Dr. B. G- Dudding's home, but the boy appeared to be dead when they arrived there. Dr. Pudding was out. and Dr. K. H. Holdgate was called, but he found that the boy was dead.
