Professor Sir Algernon Thomas

AUCKLAND, Tfiis Day. The death Itas occurred of Profeseor Sir Algepnon Phillips YVithiel Thomas, K.O.M.G., professor emeritus^ pf Auckland University College and previously professor of biology and geology^ at the age of 80. Knighfed at the time of the Cqronation for hi^ services to education, Sir Algernon was one of the four fouudatjou professors of Auckland University College from 1883 until 1914. He was chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schopls Board since 1916. He recently aftended five prize-giving ceremonies at grammar schools in two days, and a tumble on an uneven platform is belieyed to have injured his heart, in attempting to xegain his foothold. In a trihute to Sir Algernon this mornipg, the Hon. P, Fraser, Minister of Education, said that he was one of the foremost figures in educational activities in the Dominion. The value of his work as a scientist was acknowledged far beyond the bonndaries of New Zealand. His work for the Auckland grammar schools during wliat was considered as his "retirement years" was a lasting monument to him as an educationist.
