FIRE DESTROYS CAR NEAR KARAMU SETTLEMENT
A Hastings motor-car, owned by Si'ster E. M. Gardiner, caught fire and was totally destroyed on the main Has^ings-Napier road near the Karamu Settlement yesterday afternoon. The owner, who had fortunately left the car to investigate a smell of burning, was uuhurt^ bnt suffered from shock. First indication that sometliing was m-ong was given when Sister Gardiner noticed si smell of what appeared to be burning rubber. She thought that this might^ be due to a flat tyre, but upon alighting from the car to investigate, discovered that there was- smoke coming from under the bonnet. A few moments. later the engine burst into flames., which spread to the bodywork of the car in quick time.
