SLOW WATERSIDE WORK
Reason Hard to Ascertain Eecent observations by Britisb shipping authorities visiting New Zealand are to the effect that the waterside labour of this country needs speeding up considerably. In an interview yesterday, Mr J. E. Eooper, a direetor of the Port Line, stated' that he was at a loss to account for the marked slowing down of waterside work in the Dominion, and that conversations with several of the men had donc nothing to enlighten him on the point. "I talked to several men to get tliair views as to why the work has slowed down to such a marked degree, " said Mr Eooper, "but I cannot get two people to agree. The companies at homt are quite prepared to have the men working under better conditions and for better pay, but they do expect a good day's work in retnrn, and that is what they are definitely not getting. The men don't seem to have the slightest idea what is wrong with their conditions."
