TEACHERS PRAISED
Successful Year in Hawke's Bay A DIFFICULT PERIOD "I wish to congratulate the teachers on another year's successful work," said the chairman of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, Mr. G. A. Maddison, in his annual report. "The year has been a difficult one from a teaching standpoint. The schol work in the first term was seriously upset by the closing of the sehools on account of - the infantile paralysis epidemic. In many cases arrangements were made for lessons to be published in the Press, and the teachers cooperated most heartily in endeavouring to make '.his substitute syitem of instruction as successful as possible, and in making up the leeway when the pupils returned to sehool. "It should be mentioned also that, owing to the shortage of teachers, it has not been possible to provide sufficient additional assistanis to relieve pressure in large classes where such was necessary, with the result that sehools have, in general, been staffed strictly in accordance with the schedule. This is really not adequate, and in some of the sehools there have been some very large classes. "Despite these difficulties, however, the sehool work has on the whole been well maintained at a high standard."
