BRITISH BOWLERS ARRIVE

Welcomed by Major of Hastings PLAY THIS AFTERNOON The touring British bowling team arrived in Hastings by the mail train last evening, and were aecorded an informal welcome by the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, and the president of the Hawke's Bay Bowling Centre, Mr W. Ross. The teams will be engaged this afternoon in games with teams representing the Hawke's Bay centre. The captain of the tourists is Mr David Gar.diner, of Belfast, vice-chair-rnfl.n of the Irish .Bowling Association^ and the vice-captain, Mr E. Shuttle, captain of the Berkshire County Bowling Association. The organiser of the party is Mr JStewart Brown. The party consists of 35 all told — 19 men and 16 women. From the playing point of view its strength is four rinks. After touring New Zealand, the party is to leave on January 11 for Australia, where they will partieipate in the Australian bowling carnival. Eleven of the party are to be the official representatives of their respective counties at the Empire Games, to be held in Sydney early liexf year. The party will later visit Melbourne and Adelaide, and return home via South Africa. The complete party is as follows: — Mr and Mrs F. C. Angel (Wales), Mr R. and Miss H. P. Baines (Ireland), Mr H. H. Child (England). Mr W. Clarke (Ireland), Mr and Mrs J. G. Cuthbert (Scotland), Mr and Mrs D. E. Gardiner (Ireland), Mr G. Hiscock (England), Mr and Mrs E. How (England), Mr and Mrs F. Jamos (Ireland). Mr S. Jones (England), Mr and Mrs C. T. Marcon (England), Mr and Mrs J. B. McAlpine -(Scotland), Mrs E. Morris. Mrs M. Mowbray and Miss Eobinson, Mr and Mre G. W. Powe (England), Mr and Mrs J. C. Eeed (Ameriea, joined the party at Panama), Mr and Mrs J. J. Smith (England), Mr E. Shuttle (England), Mr and Mrs E. Tappenden (England), Mr and Mrs A. A. Templeton (S.cotland), Mr E, Stewart Brown (Scotland). Although the party is not an official party touring New Zealand under the control of the International Bowling Board. nevertheless no f ewer than 11 of its 19 bowling members are to repre* isent their eountries at the Empire Games, England is to be represented by J. G. Cuthbert, E. Shuttle, E. Tappenden, and S. Jones. Jones is to play in the pairs, his partner being a player who is to proeeed direct, to Sydney from England. The other three will make up the rink, with a fourth player, who is yet to be ' selected from the present party. Scotland is to be represented by J. B. McAlpine and A. A. Templeton, who are to play in the pairs. Complete instructions have not been . received yet iegarding the Irish team, but it is expected that it will be H. P. Baines, W. Clarke. F. Jaines, and D. E. Gardiner. Several members of the paTfcy have oreditablo bowling records in international matches. The captain was a member oi the team that won the international cup for Ireland in 1905, in the eontest in which the competing teams represented England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The last time he was a member of the infer national Irish team was in 1927. At the present time he is a member of the seleetion committee. Others who have international records are Clarke, Tappenden, Jones, and Howe. This morning the party was conducted on a tour of the distriet, visiting Havelock Nortfi. Te Mata Peak, Taradale. and Napier. Before their game this afternoon . they • will be given a civic welcome.
