A blizzard delayed Yiolet Montgomery, national sprint champion, from her prairie home on the way to Winnipeg, where she missed the train and took an aeroplane to Yancouver and was last over the gangplank. At the eleventh hour a public subscription and radio appeal enabled the embarkation of the Vancouver swiraming champions Mary Baggaley and Joan Langdon and also the boxing coach Tommy Gann.
